Girl Scouting Works: The Alumnae Impact Study

About This Project

Girl Scouts is the world’s most successful organization dedicated to creating girl leaders, with 3.2 million active members and an estimated 59 million alumnae. Nearly one in every two adult women in the United States was a member of Girl Scouts as a girl.

Girl Scouts has built its success on a deep commitment to timeless values, building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Fluent’s academically rigorous study determined that participation in scouting has resulted in alumnae’s success in their personal lives, professional accomplishments, and civic and community engagement.

In preparation to its centennial, Girl Scouts of the USA, an organization with 3.2 million active members, wanted to explore the impact it has had on women who participated in Scouting in their youth. GSUSA commissioned Fluent a study to examine the impact of scouting on its alumnae.

Fluent conducted a large-scale, multi-phased study with the general population of American women, including women who were Girl Scouts in their youth. The study measured the long-term impact of Girl Scouting on its alumnae, establishing that participation in Scouting results in positive life outcomes on several indicators, including education, income, positive sense of self, civic engagement and volunteerism.

The research established that one in two American women had been in Girl Scouts at some point in her life, and that participation in Scouting has positively impacted the lives of 59 million women. The research study was widely publicized and used in membership drives and marketing campaigns.
