Girls of Color Are Ready to Lead!

About This Project

Women of color are heavily underrepresented in politics and business. Women of color are 36 percent of our nation’s female population and approximately 18 percent of the entire U.S. population. They make up about one-third of the female workforce. Yet, they occupy only 12 percent  of managerial and professional positions. Fluent was commissioned a study examining factors that influence girls’ of color interest in and aspirations for leadership, as well as barriers that might be holding them back.

Girls Leadership commissioned a research study examining factors that influence girls’ of color interest in and aspirations for leadership, as well as barriers that might be holding them back.

Fluent employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies to examine attitudes of teen girls of color towards leadership, and factors that either drive leadership aspirations or stand in the way of leadership experiences. The study also examined the role of educators in motivating and supporting girls’ aspirations for leadership.

The seminal report on the experiences of teenage girls of color with leadership has been recently publicly released and garnered a lot of media attention. The research has informed leadership programming for girls of color, and professional development programs for middle and high school educators.
